NWS Mission and Skywarn Vision Statements

National Weather Service

Our Mission Statement: To serve the public by providing severe weather and flood warnings along with public and aviation forecasts for twenty six counties in central and southeastern Kansas, primarily for the protection of life and property. This is accomplished by maximizing the use of new technology and educating the citizens to ensure appropriate response to the weather.

Wichita Skywarn
Mission Statement: To improve the quality of SKYWARN® volunteer services to the Wichita NWS and the surrounding area by recruiting SKYWARN® volunteers that communicate well, by training the SKYWARN® volunteers thoroughly, and by improving the methods, quality, and frequency of communication and visibility as they relate to the "High Impact" events that affect the Wichita NWS area of responsibility. The Wichita Skywarn group has over 400 volunteers in the 26 county Wichita coverage area. Provide multiple paths of alerting the group of impending weather - texting services and e-mail.

A shelf cloud. Taken from Wichita Point at Cheney Reservoir State Park Video courtesy John Miller

The loop to the right is an animation of a storm witnessed by Chuck, James, John and Kent, KB0RWI. Kent, KB0RWI is listed at Cheney Lake and St Joe. This was filmed from Wichita Point at Cheney Reservoir. At no time did I see this as a tornado, so I believe the one reported was not in this area. This storm was being reported to the NWS Wichita office as a 7 mile wall cloud. Following this picture sequence, we proceeded to sit under a training supercell that radar on that date can confirm lasted for 4-5 hours and left 7+ inches of rain in its wake. See full text of storm reports here on the bottom of the page.

After several months and watching the video, Kent took the footage to the Wichita NWS office, which was used in the next years "Storm Fury on the Plains" presentation. What you see in the funnel was described as a convergence of two weather boundries under this cloud. Gauging of wind speeds, I assumed and was obviously correct that the winds were in excess of 70mph, as rain was forced in to the vehicle I was in around the doors.
